Exploring YouTube stats

by Aanarav Sareen on February 23, 2010

In a results-driven world, data is everything. Over the past few years, YouTube has grown tremendously. The site has been expanding it’s feature set by introducing functions that are producer-friendly.

One gradual enhancement has been it’s ‘statistics’ feature. In this post, we’ll explore how you can use these stats:

  1. Go to YouTube.com and sign-in to your account.
  2. Hover over your username and select ‘My Videos.’
  3. Next to a video, click on the ‘Insight’ button.
  4. For each video, YouTube allows you to explore the following information: Views, Discovery, Demographics, and Community.
  • Views: Shows you the number of views over a defined time period and across geographical locations.
  • Discovery: Provides you with information as to how people are finding your video.
  • Demographics: Provides you with an audience profile.
  • Community: Lists the number of users that have commented or rated a particular video.

All this data is extremely important as it allows a producer to better understand their audience. It also can be used as a sales tool for advertisers that want a specific level of granularity.
