CNNGO: Local travel site from CNN

CNNGo
Nearly every media and publishing company is looking to expand into the local market. But, CNN is doing it in a way that is very exciting. I recently came across CNNGo. It’s a travel site focused on some of the larger destinations in Asia. Currently, the site has a beta label and covers 6 cities: Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai, Singapore and Tokyo.

Each destination is further separated into 5 categories: eat, drink, play, shop and sleep.

From the site’s about page:

CNNGo is ultimately all about providing you a better experience of the place you live or are traveling to, and giving you a real sense of its makeup and character. A guide to the city by insiders for insiders.

After browsing through some of the destinations I’ve been to, I’d say that the site is fairly accurate and provides information that many other travel sites don’t. Furthermore, CNNGo is run independently from CNN.com. The main CNN site doesn’t even reference CNNGo on it’s travel page.

The potential for CNNGo is endless. The company can use it to:

  • Explore international markets.
  • Attract high-end travel marketers.
  • Build an international database of local businesses and implement something like Yelp.

While it’s still a new site, I’m curious to see how it shapes out.
