Defining viral video

by Aanarav Sareen on April 6, 2009

Viral video is a topic that has been coming up a little too frequently in the past few days, with the latest being on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice. I will also be moderating a panel at Digital Hollywood, which discuses viral video.

First and foremost — what is a viral video? If we go by Wikipedia, then a viral video is:

A viral video is a video clip that gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing, typically through email or Instant messaging, blogs and other media sharing websites.

With that definition, can brand marketers create viral videos? Or, can they create videos that may become viral? How do you know if your video is going to be viral? Also, taking a look at this list, there doesn’t appear to be a formula for viral videos.

So, how can companies offer ‘viral video’ services? If a company was able to successfully offer such services, wouldn’t there be a formula?
